Without a proper foundation maintenance plan, your home could experience serious structural issues and eventually begin to fail. Ward off serious foundation issues and keep repair costs low with these five tips:

Maintain a consistent moisture level around your foundation. Don't allow the soil around your house or structure to become exceedingly wet or dry.

Make sure your structure is on a proper slope and consider installing a foundation drainage system. Grading the ground around your foundation is essential and a proper slope helps to ensure water flows away from your foundation.

Watch for large trees. Trees need moisture to live and large tree roots will suck water out of the soil around your structure and damage it. Make sure to plant trees at least 15 to 30 feet away.

Inspect your plumbing annually. Under-slab plumbing leaks are one of the biggest causes of foundation damage. These leaks can damage sprinkler systems and other parts of your home's plumbing system. Have a qualified plumber perform a check of your plumbing lines to ensure there isn't any water discharging around your home.

Monitor your home's temperature. The temperature of your home should always be maintained at a steady level. It should not be without heating or cooling for a substantial period of time. Those fluctuations in the temperature of your home may cause your structure's slab to expand and contract.
